Botanical Name: Corypha umbraculifera
Family: Arecaceae (Palm family)
Origin / Distribution:
Native to India and Sri Lanka, especially found in tropical coastal regions and parts of South India.
Role of Tree in Society:
 Known for its very large fan-shaped leaves.
 Leaves traditionally used for making umbrellas, mats, and thatching roofs.
 In ancient times, the leaves were used as writing material for manuscripts (palm-leaf
manuscripts).
Ethical / Cultural Value:
 Considered culturally important due to its use in traditional literature and documentation.
 Associated with ancient Indian learning and preservation of knowledge through palm-leaf
manuscripts.
Medicinal Value:
 Some parts of the palm are used in traditional medicine.
 Sap and other extracts may be used in local remedies for digestive problems and weakness.
